First time I’ve listened to Nico’s solo songs was through The Velvet Underground box compilation
Peel Slowly and See. My favourite song was (and still is) It Was A Pleasure Then (it was a pleasure then and now) that was part of
Chelsea Girl. It was a truly revelation to listen to an electric guitar being played that way, so softly, so distant, so enigmatically; and then the eruption of noisy feedbacks and the combination of beauty and “ugliness” became one of my first musical lessons and a deep rooted principle of self-composition. For life.
